Lyons Sweep NEWMAC Series Against Emerson

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team earned a 21-1 win over Emerson College Saturday afternoon in game two of the three game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series. Wheaton then took the third and final game 12-1 at Sidell Stadium.


GAME ONE: Wheaton 21 - Emerson 1 
Senior Mike Bruemmel collected his second win of the season, pitching seven complete innings, surrendering just five hits, while striking out seven and walking none. 

After a scoreless first inning, Wheaton put up its first run of the game in the second with Zach Goodwin-Boyd coming in on an RBI ground out from Willy Boyd. The Lyons tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-RBI double from Goodwin-Boyd. 

Josh LaJoie picked up an RBI single to start the scoring in the fourth, before Nick Raposo cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left center. The home run is the first of the season for the first-year catcher. 

Wheaton sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven of them, to open up a 14-0 advantage. The inning was highlighted by RBI doubles from Matt Cook, Raposo and Tyler Walsh.

The Lyons added five more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Trailing 21-0, the visitors plated their first and only run of the game in the eighth with an RBI ground out from Joe Paladino. Connor Damiano, who led off the inning with a single to center, came around to score on the play.


GAME TWO: Wheaton 12 - Emerson 1
First-year Trevor Marques collected his second win of the season in game two of the Lyons double-header. The lefty pitched six complete in his second start of the year, giving up just two hits, while striking out a career best eight batters. 

Wheaton jumped in front in the second inning when Walsh doubled to center, scoring Goodwin-Boyd from third. Goodwin-Boyd started the inning with a triple to right center. 

Leading 1-0, the Lyons added two more runs in the fourth with Boyd and Casey Twomey coming around on a double down the left field line from Chris Ruocco

After retiring Emerson in order in the top of the fifth, Wheaton added another run in the bottom half of the inning, with Jared Sharkey scoring on a bases loaded walk. LaJoie came in to score on an RBI ground out from Sharkey in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 5-0 game. 

Emerson earned a run back in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Clint Fontanella. The fly out to right center knocked in Nolan Megna. 

The Lyons responded with four runs in their half of the inning. Another triple from Goodwin-Boyd highlighted the inning, scoring Sharkey, Cook and LaJoie. Wheaton concluded its scoring in the eighth with an RBI double from Josh Trybuch and RBI singles from Jimmy Gianquitti and Justin Sellar

The Lyons will return to the field on Monday, April 17 at 4 p.m. against Nichols College at Sidell Stadium.
