Baseball Completes Sweep of Emerson With Doubleheader Victories

GAME ONE: Wheaton 16 - Emerson 6

RECORDS: Wheaton (14-12, 8-4 NEWMAC) - Emerson (6-17, 1-10 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Danvers, Mass. (Pete Frates Diamond)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Emerson captured an early lead, putting up three runs in the second inning, before tacking on another in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. 
  • Wheaton cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth with an RBI flyout from Bryant Salkind that plated Nick Raposo. Another sacrifice fly, this time from Ryan McKeon scored the final run of the inning. 
  • The Lyons took the lead in the fifth inning, plating eight runs on five hits and one Emerson error. The scoring got started with an RBI single to left from Raposo that scored first-year Brody Ashley. Ashley led off the inning with a bunt single. With the bases loaded, Jared Sharkey singled to left, scoring Chris Ruocco. Another walk moved teh runners around the bases sending Raposo home. Trevor Marques scored on a shot to the shortstop from Jimmy Gianquitti, making it an 8-4 contest. The runs kept coming in for the Lyons with a single from Willy Boyd scoring Gianquitti, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Ashley and RBI single to left from Ruocco. 
  • The Lions earned a run back in their half of the inning, making it a 10-5 contest. 
  • Sharkey knocked in both Wheaton runs in the eighth with a double to left field that scored Marques and Raposo. Wheaton ended the scoring in the top of the ninth with an RBI single from Ashley, Sharkey and Salkind.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton came out strong in game two, capturing a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never letting it go. The scoring got started with a single up the middle from Raposo that gave Matt Cook, who led off the inning with a double to right, time to come home. Raposo scored moments later thanks to an Emerson error, while Marqes scored on a sac fly from Sharkey. 
  • Emerson earned a run back in the bottom half of the inning. 
  • Boyd pushed the Lyon lead to 4-1 in the second with a ground rule double that plated Gammond. Boyd knocked in Gammond again in the fourth with a single to right, before coming around to score on a wild pitch moments later. Raposo scored the final run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle that plated Ruocco. 
  • Trailing 7-1, Emerson scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but had it erased with a double to left from Marques in the sixth. The Lions earned the run back in the bottom half of the inning, making it an 8-3 contest. 
  • Wheaton scored one run in the seventh and eighth with Salkind scoring on a balk, before a Sharkey sac fly scored Raposo in the eighth. 
  • Emerson ended the scoring in the ninth but it would not be enough.
