Baseball Falls to Babson; Defeat Clark to Move to NEWMAC Championship Game Setting Up Babson Rematch

GAME ONE: Wheaton 3 - Babson 6

RECORDS: Wheaton (22-16, 13-4 NEWMAC) -  Babson (31-10, 14-3 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Babson Park, Mass. (Govoni Field)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton got a 2-for-4 performance from Nick Raposo, while Jared Sharkey finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.  
  • Dan Southerland got the start, pitching seven complete, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out eight. Zach Pipa collected the loss after surrendering three runs. Patrick Arter closed out the game. 
  • Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the first, starting with a lead off single from Matt Cook, before coming around to score on a one-out single to left from Raposo. 
  • Babson tied the game in the second with a two-out single that drove in a run. The Beavers took the lead in the fourth with another two-out single. 
  • Sharkey put Wheaton back in front in the sixth with a two-run home run over the fence in left that picked up Raposo. 
  • Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Babson scored four runs in the frame to take the lead, which would stick and move them straight to the championship game.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Raposo had a standout performance for Wheaton against the Cougars, finishing 4-for-5 from the plate with an RBI and run scored. Chris Ruocco finished 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. 
  • Brady Furdon got the start for Wheaton, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out seven. Jimmy Gowen came in in relief to pick up the win after finishing 3.1 innings with three hits and two strikouts. Arter earned his fourth save of the year after closing out the ninth.   
  • Wheaton scored first, plating three runs in the third, starting with an RBI triple from Ruocco that knocked in Cook. An RBI groundout from Raposo scored Ruocco from third before a single to center from Bryant Salkind scored the sophomore catcher. 
  • The Cougars earned a run back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to right center from Ryan Ruhlin
  • Clark added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, before pushing its lead to 4-3 in the fifth. 
  • Wheaton regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Sharkey started the inning with a single to center before moving to third on a Quinn Krais hit to deep left center. A single to center from Ryan McKeon drove in Sharkey. With the game tied at 4-4, Willy Boyd drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single to left that plated Krais.
