Trio of Lyons named to national field hockey academic squad

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College field hockey senior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and juniors Julia Atwood (Concord, MA/Brooks School) and Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) have been named to the 2009 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic squad.

It marked the second time Atwood and Bagley were lauded, while Strock drew her initial award. Honorees must record a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or better through the first semester of the 2009-10 academic year.

Bagley played every second in goal for the second straight season last fall, posting three shutouts to go along with a 2.31 goals against average. She finished her career fifth in program history in victories (18), tied for fifth in shutouts (8), sixth in minutes (2,802:58), and seventh in both saves (315) and goals against average (1.87).

A New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) academic all-league qualifier, Atwood netted seven markers to tie for second on the team. Among them was a pair of game-winning tallies, including during a 3-2 triumph over Mount Holyoke College.

Strock, who was an NFHCA all-region selection last fall, totaled seven goals and three assists during her junior year after missing all but one game in 2008 due to injury. Strock netted multiple points six times, and the Lyons were 6-0 when she scored a goal.

Wheaton went 6-12 in 2009, falling six times by a single goal. During NEWMAC play, the Lyons posted a 2-6 mark before suffering a first-round setback in the postseason tournament.
