Four-goal second half dooms Wheaton at Montclair State
MONTCLAIR, N.J.- The Wheaton College field hockey team held host Montclair State University off the board for the first 24-minutes plus of Saturday's game before a four-goal, second-half burst by the Red Hawks put the contest out of reach, as the Lyons suffered a 6-1 setback at Sprague Field.
Wheaton, which had won its first game of the season on Thursday by the same score, falls to 1-1. Montclair State evened its record at 1-1.
Senior Jessica Strock (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) contributed her fourth goal of the season but it wasn't enough, as the hosts tallied the game's first five goals before Strock tipped in junior Bonnie Davies' (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) attempt off a penalty corner in the 64th minute.
Montclair State outshot the Lyons by a 25-8 count, including 14-5 in the second half, while holding a 7-3 edge in corners. Wheaton sophomore goalie Alex Smith (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) notched 13 stops in her second start.
For the Red Hawks, senior Deana Hagel (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) had a hand in four goals with two tallies and a pair of assists. Sophomore Kate Norgard (Columbia, N.J./North Warren) tacked on two goals, while classmate Megan Bosland (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) turned aside seven shots in the cage.
The Lyons complete their New Jersey trip tomorrow afternoon at William Paterson University for a 1:00 p.m. start.
