Lyons salvage split in New Jersey, turn back William Paterson, 3-1
MONTCLAIR, N.J.- Freshman Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) provided the Wheaton College field hockey team with a pair of first-half markers during a 3-1 victory at William Paterson University on Sunday at Wightman Stadium.
After falling to Montclair State University yesterday, the Lyons salvaged a split during their weekend trip to New Jersey, improving to 2-1 on the young season. The Pioneers dropped their second straight game to fall to 1-2.
After allowing a goal on the game's first shot 1:20 in, the visitors responded 2:42 later when Chick redirected a junior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) penalty-corner pass. Chick added a second penalty-corner strike with 11:08 remaining in the open half, using a feed from freshman Eliza Kennedy (Madison, Conn./Tabor Academy) for a 2-1 lead at the break.
Three straight shots to begin the second half led to Wheaton's third goal, when senior Margaux Bolte (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) fired home a rebound 1:10 into play. The Lyons tallied nine shots per half for an 18-4 advantage while taking 10 of the game's 16 corners. Sophomore goalie Alex Smith (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished with three saves.
William Paterson sophomore Danielle Meade (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) was its lone goal scorer, while junior Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) made 14 saves.
Wheaton continues its five-game road swing on Thursday night at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Start time is 7:00 p.m.
