Wheaton succumbs to UMass-Dartmouth following five-goal second half

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.- The Wheaton College field hockey team trailed just 1-0 50-plus minutes into action before host University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth reeled off three goals during a 4:53 span in the second half en route to a 6-1 victory Thursday night at Cressy Field.

The Lyons, who have been on the road for all of their matches thus far, slipped to 2-2 after playing in their third 6-1 game of the season, while the Corsairs improved to 2-1.

Wheaton junior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) extended her points streak to four games after assisting freshman Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) in the 59th minute, but it proved to be too little too late as the hosts tacked on a pair of insurance goals during the final six minutes.

UMass-Dartmouth senior Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) turned in an impressive performance with four goals and one assist, including scoring the winner.  Sophomore Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, Mass./Bishop Stang) added a pair of tallies.

Freshman goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) was credited with seven saves in her Wheaton debut, while Corsair first-year keeper Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) finished with nine stops.

Despite falling by the five-goal count, the Lyons were only outshot by a 15-12 margin while taking seven of the game's 15 penalty corners.

Wheaton finishes up its five-game road stretch on Saturday at River College at 3:00 p.m.
