High-powered Wheaton offense scores six during sixth straight win

BOSTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College field hockey team scored at least five goals for the sixth time this season during Sunday afternoon's 6-1 victory over non-conference foe Simmons College at the Winsor School Field.

Extending their winning streak to six games, which ties for the fourth-longest such stretch in program history, the Lyons improved to 8-2.  The Sharks slipped to 3-4.

Six different Wheaton players found the back of the cage, including junior Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), who also added two assists.  Junior Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine/Central) and sophomore Alex Smith (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) notched first-half goals, as the Blue and White carried a 2-0 advantage into the break.

The Lyons pulled away in the second frame, outscoring Simmons by a 4-1 count.  Asack, senior Jessica Strock (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable), junior Tierney Richardson (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and freshman Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) all tallied.  Strock's team-best 13th goal ranks fifth in school history.

Freshman goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) was credited with two saves in the victory.  Wheaton dominated the stat sheet, holding commanding advantages of 40-8 in shots and 20-6 in penalty corners.

Simmons sophomore Zoie Kaley (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook Community) was the lone goal scorer, while freshman Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) had 12 stops.

Smashing last year's goal total of 35, Wheaton already has 55 tallies through 10 games.  Its 55 goals rank third in program annals and are just four shy of the top mark set in 2006.

Wheaton remains on the road on Saturday with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
