Lyons blanked at seventh-ranked Skidmore to begin New York trip
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- The Wheaton College field hockey team began its two-game upstate New York trip with a 7-0 loss to nationally-ranked Skidmore College on Saturday at Thoroughbred Field, as the Lyons and Thoroughbreds met for the first time since 1978.
Wheaton falls to 12-6, while Skidmore, which is ranked seventh in the country by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), extended its winning streak to 15 games in improving to 16-1.
Holding the high-powered Thoroughbred offense to just two first-half goals, the Blue and White surrendered three tallies under a four-minute span to start the second half. The Lyons were outshot by a 22-3 count and took just two of 13 penalty corners.
Wheaton freshman goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) was credited with eight stops between the pipes, while junior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) recorded her fifth defensive save of the season.
Skidmore senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had a big day with four goals and one assist, while junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) added a pair of helpers. Senior goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) went untested in a little over 45 minutes.
The Lyons travel to Schenectady tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. start against Union College.
