SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- The Wheaton College field hockey team had its regular season come to a close in disappointing fashion on Sunday, as the Lyons dropped a 7-1 decision to non-conference opponent Union College at Bailey Field.
Wheaton slips to 12-7 overall, while the Dutchwomen raised their record to 10-7.
After Union jumped on top early with three goals during a 4:18 span, Lyon freshman Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) made the score 3-1 with the first half's final tally at 25:11. Junior Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine/Central) passed from 20 yards out and found Chick in front of the left post.
Following the halftime break, the hosts pulled away for good, scoring four times in 17:41 of the second stanza. The Dutchwomen held commanding advantages of 19-1 in shots and 7-0 in penalty corners in the second half alone.
Wheaton freshman keeper Ellie Massengill's (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) 14 saves were one short of her season best.
Union had three players score two goals each, while senior Kelsey Powers (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) played a hand in four scores with one tally and three assists. Classmate Sarah Rios (Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls) made seven saves in 64:39.
Wheaton turns its attention to the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, where the third-seeded Lyons will host number-six Clark University in Tuesday's opening round at Faxon Field in Rehoboth at 2:00 p.m.
