TRINITY, Conn. - Senior Emily Asack (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) scored a pair of goals - including the game-winner 13:21 into overtime - to lift the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Drew University in non-conference action at Trinity College.
Trailing 2-1 late in the second half, Asack one-timed a pass from sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) into the back of the cage with 1:55 remaining in regulation. In overtime, sophomore Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) sent a pass on a penalty corner to Asack, who blasted a shot past Drew goalkeeper Christiana Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin).
"The team stepped up when we needed to the most to beat a very good team," said Wheaton head coach Rebecca Begley.
Wheaton (1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chick 8:10 into the game. Just over 10 minutes later, sophomore Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) tied the score at one as she converted a penalty shot past sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional).
The score remained tied into the second half until freshman Erin Maguire (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) one-touched a pass from senior Mary Esposito (Woolrich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) past Massengill to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
The Lyons outshot the Rangers 16-8 and held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Massengill finished the night with four saves while Carlino recorded nine saves.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Biddeford, Maine for an 11 a.m. contest with the University of New England on Saturday. Drew (0-1) hosts Frostburg State on Saturday at noon in the first game of the Drew Fall Festival.
