BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) scored her first goal of the season in Wheaton College's 2-1 loss at University of New England Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at the Big Blue Turf.
After the teams played to a scoreless first half, UNE junior Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H./Merrimack Valley) put the Nor'easters on the board with 25:48 to go on a drive from the left side into the far side of the cage. Senior Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine/Mt. Blue) set-up the goal with a slip pass from the top of the circle.
Just 54 seconds later, Davies tucked a drive inside the right post from the top of the circle to even the score at one. Classmate Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine/Central) started the play with the insert off a penalty corner.
Following Davies goal, UNE returned the pressure to the Wheaton defense, and after a pair of penalty corners came up empty, sophomore Kelsea Beisaw (Jay, Maine/Jay) collected a loose ball on the right side and blasted it near-post for what would be the game-winner at 48:37.
The Lyons managed to draw eight corners the rest of the way, but could not find the equalizer before time expired. For the contest, Wheaton had an 18-11 edge in penalty corners.
Rookie goalie Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H./Merrimack Valley) denied four shots by the visitors to earn the win for the Nor'easters (2-0), while her counterpart, sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), made seven saves in defeat.
