BANGOR, Maine – The Wheaton College field hockey team suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Husson University in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon.
After Husson grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Sabrina Vallancourt (Newport, ME/Nokomis) at 28:08 of the first half, senior Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine/Central) scored her first goal of the season at 31:19 off a feed from classmate Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) to even the score at one going into the break. The Lyons outshot the Eagles 5-4 in the first half.
The Lyons took the lead at 57:20 on Asack's third goal of the season, but Husson evened the game at two with a late tally by sophomore Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy), whose unassisted goal with 1:18 to go sent the game into overtime. In the extra session, junior Kara Poirier (Berlin, N.H./Berlin) potted her third goal of the season at 74:30, giving the Eagles the win.
Wheaton finished the afternoon with a 13-8 edge in shots and a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) made two saves in defeat for the Lyons while Christine McGee (Whitefield, N.H./White Mts. Regional) tallied eight to earn the win for Husson.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they host Elmira at 1 p.m. The Eagles host the University of New England next Saturday at 1 p.m.
