Lyons topple Elmira, 6-2

REHOBOTH, Mass. – Senior Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) scored two goals and added an assist in Wheaton College's 6-2 win over Elmira College in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Faxon Field.

Classmate Carmela Luzi (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional) also scored twice for the Lyons, who evened their record at 2-2. Junior Gina Maffei (Wayne, N.J./Morristown-Beard) and sophomore Shannon Nelligan (Poughquag, N.Y./Canterbury) scored for the Soaring Eagles, who fell to 0-2.

Asack opened the scoring with her first goal of the season at 12:52. Chick doubled the Lyons lead when she converted a penalty stroke at 32:37, and Luzi's first tally of the afternoon on a corner to end the half pushed the lead to 3-0. The Lyons outshot Elmira 17-0 in the opening 35 minutes of the contest.

Maffei's first goal of the season 3:10 into the second half sliced the Lyons lead to 3-1. Sophomore McKenna Light (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon) picked up an assist on the goal. Wheaton answered back with goals at 43:09, 47:19 and 51:50 by Asack, Luzi and sophomore Eliza Kennedy (Madison, Conn./Tabor Academy), respectively, to make it a 6-1 lead. Nelligan converted a penalty stroke with 32 ticks on the clock to close the scoring.

The Lyons finished the afternoon with a 36-4 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corners. Sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) played the first half and earned her second win of the season. Freshman Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) played the final 35 minutes and recorded two saves.

Sophomore Lauren Thomas (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) started in goal for the Soaring Eagles and was credited with 16 saves before being replaced in the second half by freshman Brooke Ramage (Masonville, N.Y./Sidney). She finished with eight saves.

"Emily Asack led the team by starting off the scoring in both halves," said Lyons head coach Rebecca Begley. "Her hustle, intensity, and speed stood out today. Asack gives 100 percent, 100 percent of the time."

The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they travel to Daniel Webster for a 1 p.m. match. The Soaring Eagles travel to Anna Maria for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
