BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) scored a pair of goals in Wheaton College's 3-1 win at Simmons College in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Canterbury School) also tallied for the Lyons, who improved to 4-3 this season and 2-2 on the road. Freshman Mercedes Godin (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored the lone goal for the Sharks, who also stand at 4-3 on the season.
McCann's third goal of the season 7:55 into the contest gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead. Senior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) was credited with an assist on the goal. Rocha's first goal of 2011 less than five minutes later pushed the Lyons lead to 2-0. Senior Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) picked up her third assist of the year on the goal, which came at 12:10.
Simmons cut its deficit in half at 28:41 when Godin knocked in a pass from senior Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) to cap the first-half scoring. Wheaton held an 11-3 edge in shots in the opening 35 minutes of action.
Rocha notched the only goal of the second half at 50:35, scoring off a feed from freshman Sarah McNicholas (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxboro). The Sharks did not record a shot in the second half and finished with three for the game, compared to 19 for the Lyons.
Sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) recorded two saves to earn her third win of the season for Wheaton. Sophomore Renna Smith (Belfast, ME) stopped 10 saves in defeat.
Wheaton returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Bridgewater State for a 1 p.m. contest. Simmons plays at Bay Path on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
