CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) made 11 saves in Wheaton College's 4-0 loss to MIT Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Jack Berry Field.
The win lifts the Engineers to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lyons move to 6-6 (1-3 NEWMAC).
MIT had a number of good scoring opportunities early on, but Massengill made a pair of tremendous kick saves on shots by Klauber and smothered a breakaway attempt by Duffy to keep the game scoreless.
Following Duffy's breakaway, the Engineers were awarded a penalty corner, which resulted in junior Kimberly Barker's (Camden, N.Y./Camden) eighth goal of the season at 16:19. Barker gathering a loose ball in front of the net and pushed it home to give MIT a 1-0 lead.
Engineers senior Kameron Klauber (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) nearly extended the lead just before the half as she broke past the Wheaton defense all alone, but Massengill again came out of the net to smother the ball and preserve the one-goal deficit.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Klauber broke in alone on Massengill again and potted her 13th goal of the season at 48:47 to double the MIT lead. Sophomore Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J./Oak Knoll School) added an insurance marker eight minutes later, and senior Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md./Sherwood) rounded out the scoring for the Cardinal and Gray.
Sophomore Casey Landry (Peabody, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and freshman Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) each recorded one save in one half of action in goal for MIT, which outshot the Lyons 27-8 on the afternoon. Senior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley) paced Wheaton with two shots on goal.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Springfield for an 11 a.m. match. MIT hosts Mount Holyoke next Saturday at 1 p.m.
