BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) scored her fifth goal of the season in Wheaton College's 2-1 loss at Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Tuesday evening.
The loss drops the Lyons to 7-8 (3-3 NEWMAC) while the Beavers improve to 8-9 (4-2 NEWMAC). The contest was Babson's fourth-annual 'Play 4 the Cure' event in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sponsored by both Babson and Wheaton, this year's event once again raised money for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation.
The Lyons took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Chick's goal 8:51 into the contest. She collected a loose ball out of a scramble in front of Babson senior goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and blasted it into the cage.
Babson tied the contest with a nearly identical goal 10 minutes into the second half. Off a busted penalty corner, the ball was deflected to senior Kristen Steigerwald (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) five yards from the goal line. The Beavers' tri-captain hammered it through a crowd and past screened senior goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) for her third marker of the year at 45:16.
The game remained 1-1 until the 54th minute, when Babson senior tri-captain Anneliese Brosch (Essex, Mass./Manchester-Essex Regional) gained control at the top of the circle and flicked a shot toward the right post. Sophomore Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) then redirected it back to the center of the cage for her team-leading 19th goal of the season and a 2-1 Beaver advantage at 53:28.
Pashos stymied the Lyons the rest of the way, finishing with 10 saves to earn the win. Massengill finished with six saves for Wheaton, the best two coming in the second half – one on a reverse sweep by senior Courtney Weaving (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley) just 15 seconds in and another on a lunging tip shot by Lockwood eight and a half minutes later.
Babson outshot the Lyons 19-15 on the afternoon. The Lyons held a slim 8-7 edge in corners.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Smith at 2 p.m. Prior to the match, Wheaton will honor its seven seniors: Emily Arena (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School), Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn./Shepaug Valley), Kathryn Ende (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale), Carmela Luzi (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional), Tierney Richardson (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro), and Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine/Central). Babson travels to Springfield for an 11 a.m. match on Saturday.
