SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Rehoboth) scored her ninth goal of the season 11:58 into overtime to lift the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Union College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at College Park Field.
Senior Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) also scored for the Lyons, who improved to 10-8 this season and have now won 10+ games in five of the last six seasons under head coach Rebecca Begley. The Lyons now wait for the conclusion of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule to determine if they have qualified for a playoff berth.
Junior Caroline Moran (Unionville, Pa./Westminster School) scored for Union, which finishes its season 2-15.
Asack gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead when she scored an unassisted goal off a penalty corner 12:07 into the match. Moran evened the score at one in the second half, knocking in a pass from classmate Trish Johnson (Bomoseen, Vt./Canterbury School) at 41:36. The game remained tied into overtime until Rocha potted the GWG off a feed from Asack at 81:58.
Sophomore Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) made 10 saves to earn her ninth win of the season, placing her in a tie for 10th place on the school's single-season record list. Sophomore Molly McCune (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) played the first 54 minutes between the posts for Union and allowed a goal on the only shot she faced before being replaced by freshman Corey Hedges (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) midway through the second stanza. She finished with four saves.
Wheaton was outshot by a 20-10 margin and took four penalty corners, compared to 10 for Union.
