Senior midfielder scores game-winner at 74:11
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Wheaton College senior midfielder Sarah McNicholas (Concord, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) netted the game-winning goal at the 74:11 mark of the contest to lift the Lyons to a 1-0 overtime victory against Babson College on Tuesday night at MacDowell Field.
McNicholas tipped in a rebound past Babson junior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) who was sprawled out on the turf after she made a save on Amelia Gage's (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) point-blank shot. McNicholas, who registered her second career game-winner in the contest, also gave Wheaton's its first win over the Beavers since October 14, 2008. The Lyons defeated Babson that season by a 3-0 score at home.
Costa finished with two saves on the night – including a stop on Holly Norberg's (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) penalty stroke with 6:12 remaining in regulation – while Lyons' senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) compiled seven saves for her second shutout this season.
Babson outshot Wheaton 20-6 and also held a 21-6 differential in penalty corners. McNicholas led the Lyons in shots with two total.
Sophomore back Nicole Smith (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) paced the Beavers with a game-high five shots (one on goal). First-year Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore Staci Swallow (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus) tied with four shots each.
Wheaton (9-6, 2-4 NEWMAC) travels to WPI on Saturday, October 25 for a NEWMAC contest at noon. Babson (8-9, 3-4 NEWMAC) visits Gordon College this Saturday for a non-conference matchup at noon.
