CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Wheaton College field hockey team has been honored with the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Team Award. Along with this honor, 15 Lyons have been named to the Academic Squad with 1,604 total student-athletes making the list and 148 schools with representation.
Wheaton seniors Amelia Gage and Salena Helmreich are among the select few student-athletes to be give the Academic Squad honor all four years. Alongside them are first-years Karin Dion, Elizabeth Helmreich, Morgan Karnes, Merril Nadeau, sophomore Jordan Brazis-Eberle, juniors Kelsey Buckley, Mikaela Coombs, Hailey Kohler, Emma Peterson, Alissa Rams, Hannah Southard, Riley Thompson and senior Michelle Trainor.
The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum team gradepoint average of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year.
The Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad includes all student-athletes with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or greater through the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year. There were 208 members of the Division III National Academic Squad who were also named Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction on Thursday for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or greater through the first semester.
There were 185 seniors noted for making the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad in each of their four seasons.
Wheaton concluded the 2016 season 7-10 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
