FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team fell to Washington College, 62-59, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Cruzin' Classic at the Greater Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. The Shoremen overcame a 35-28 halftime deficit to come away with the victory.
The Lyons play their final game of 2016 on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. against North Central (Ill.) in the teams last game of the Cruzin' Classic.
Nick Schmelzer finished with 11 points on a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range, finishing 4-for-5 overall. James Drury chipped in 10 points for Washington College, while Tas Dixon pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
With the game deadlocked at 11-11 with 13:34 to go in the first half, Fogarty drained a three-pointer to give the Lyons the lead for good as both teams headed into intermission. Another long range shot by Fogarty gave Wheaton its biggest lead of the opening frame, 31-23, with 3:16 on the clock.
The Lyons continued to hold the lead heading into the second half with help from a three by David Carbonello. The lead would be short lived with Washington responding with a 9-1 run to tie the game at 41-41 with 14:44 to go in the game. Schmeizer gave the Shoreman their first lead of the game with a three-pointer of his own moments later.
Wheaton continued to battle, going on an 8-0 run that tied the game at 58-58 with under five minutes remaining. Dixon drained a pair of free-throws with 4:01 remaining to give the Shoreman the lead back for good.
The Lyons shot 42% (22-for-52) from the floor, 28% (5-for-18) from three-point range and 48% (10-for-21) from the free throw stripe. Wheaton outscored Washington 32-26 in points in the paint, scored 12 of the 18 second chance points and held a 42-28 edge in rebounds.
The Shoremen shot 37% (22-for-59) from the floor, 29% (5-for-17) from three-point range and 65% (13-for-20) from the free-throw line.
