SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's basketball team fell to Springfield College 98-78 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday in Blake Arena.
Wheaton's Ryan Fogarty scored a team-best 20 points, including 14 in the first half, Duaka Ekwensi added 10 points off the bench, and Quinton Dale pulled down a team-best eight boards to go along with nine points. Wheaton held a 36-28 edge in the paint, but the Pride was able to turn 12 Lyons turnovers into 20 points.
Jake Ross produced a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards to go along with three steals,Trey Witter netted 20 points off the bench.
Wheaton opened up a 29-25 lead with 8:32 to go in the opening half on a layup by Fogarty. Springfield countered with an 8-0 run that that gave the Pride a 33-29 lead two minutes later. Fogarty answered with a three-pointer that pulled the Lyons within a point, but the Pride responded with another run to increase their lead to 40-33 with 3:57 to go. Wheaton held the Pride to just eight points the rest of the way to pull within six at halftime.
Springfield increased its lead to 15 point just five minutes into the second half. The Lyons refused to give up, mounting a 10-2 run over the next two minutes that pulled them within seven, 68-61. The Pride pushed its lead back to double-digits in the final five minutes to finish out the game win the victory.
The Lyons return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at Clark.
