Schaffer reaches 100-point plateau, Lyons lose lead in setback to Trinity
NORTON, MA- Senior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) became the third Wheaton College men's lacrosse player this spring to reach the 100-point plateau, but the Lyons succumbed to a sizeable Trinity College comeback during a 14-9 loss on Monday in Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons fell to 5-7, while the Bantams improved to 9-6.
After needing just two points to reach the century mark, Schaffer finished with four assists on the day, lending a hand on each of Wheaton's three man-up tallies against a Trinity defense that had yielded only five in its first 14 contests, ranking second in Division III in man-down defense. Sophomore Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, MA/Proctor Academy) tallied twice and added an assist, while senior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) scored twice and went 10-for-21 on face-offs.
Junior Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) and sophomore Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) netted a pair of goals apiece for the Lyons, while junior Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) contributed a goal and two assists. Senior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made 15 saves, including 11 in the first half.
Senior Harper Cullen (Rehoboth Beach, ME/Episcopal) paced Trinity with three goals and two assists, while junior Greg Brennan (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and freshman Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario/Deerfield Academy) added a hat trick apiece. Sophomore Peter Johnson (Riverside, CT/Taft School) made four saves in 38:18 of relief to notch the victory.
Wheaton rushed out with the first five goals, with three coming on special teams plays, while Horn made six opening-quarter saves to keep Trinity off the scoreboard. Schaffer assisted two man-up markers in that stretch, and Cederberg had a man-up goal and an assist. The Lyons made it 5-0 seven seconds into the second period on Willauer's man-down goal, completing a burst of five goals in 4:13.
Trinity tallied for the first time at 9:34 of the second quarter before Landers countered off a pass from Schaffer at 8:18, but the Bantams finished the half with three straight goals during a 4:33 stretch, making the score 6-4 with 1:50 remaining and trailing by that score at halftime.
The visitors finished off a 6-0 run with the first three goals of the second half, including two in a 22-second span during the opening 45 ticks, as Trinity took its first lead at 7-6 with 10:30 remaining in the third quarter. Hebert and senior Andrew Williamson (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) each scored twice in the run.
Garceau knotted the game with a man-up goal at 9:37, but the Bantams went back ahead exactly one minute later. After Wheaton fell behind by two, Landers scored with 7:03 left to bring the Lyons within 9-8, but Trinity ended the game on a 5-1 run, with Cullen turning in two goals and two assists.
