Record eight Wheaton players earn academic all-league
NORTON, MA- A program-record eight Wheaton College men's lacrosse players qualified for Pilgrim League Academic All-Conference honors, with seniors Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) and junior Peter Buongiorno (Pittsburgh, PA/Winchester Thurston School) all earning their third.
Honorees must follow a certain criteria to qualify, including having a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better upon completion of the 2009 fall semester and participating on the varsity team for the entire season.
Senior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) and junior Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) earned their second accolade, while senior Connor Compton (Deering, NH/Saint Mark's School) and freshmen Sean Doherty (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) and Hudson Hackett (Wickford, RI/Rocky Hill School) drew their first.
Both midfielders, Horan and Schaffer each appeared in all 16 games for the Lyons, as Horan started 14 contests while turning in six goals and four assists. Schaffer had 14 goals and 11 assists while standing fourth in program history in career helpers (57). He finished his career with 109 points in 63 games, one short of the school record, and earned his second Pilgrim League All-Conference accolade for his on-field success. Buongiorno was injured this season.
Horn played the past 1,620 minutes in goal for the Lyons, including all school-record 960 this season, when he posted eight victories. The second-winningest keeper in program history (24), Horn is first in minutes (2,992:29), third in goals against average (10.07), fourth in saves (546) and fifth in save percentage (.521). Best, also a member of the swimming & diving team, tallied once while seeing time in five contests.

Doherty turned in two goals and four assists in 13 contests, with five of his points coming in the last six games, while Hackett tallied once during his three appearances.
