Lyons historic season ends with 11-4 loss to Springfield in Pilgrim League Championship
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) capped his career with a three-goal afternoon in the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team's 11-4 loss at Springfield College in the Pilgrim League Championship Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Sophomore netminder Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) recorded 14 saves for the Lyons, who ended a record-setting season under first-year head coach Jamie Lockard with a single-season record 11 wins against four losses. The win gives the Pride (14-3) their fifth-straight Pilgrim League crown and the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Sophomore Ryon Lynch (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Jefferson) tallied three goals and three assists to lead Springfield, which outshot Wheaton 34-4 in the first half en route to building a 7-1 lead after 30 minutes of action. Freshman Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added three goals and two helpers while senior Shane Ferguson (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Stony Brook University) went for a goal and two assists. In goal, sophomore Rob Maher (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) made six saves to earn the win.
For Wheaton, junior Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy) picked up the other tally while senior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass./Proctor Academy) and junior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) picked up assists. Junior Ian Casey (Medway, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) caused three turnovers and collected a team-high three ground balls.
Springfield outshot the Lyons 17-0 in the first quarter and took a 5-0 lead behind two goals each from Lynch and Murphy. Following a pair of Springfield goals in the second quarter, Compton got Wheaton on the board with his ninth of the season with 10 ticks remaining in the half.
Springfield extended its lead to eight with markers from both Sheehan and Lynch midway through the third quarter. The Lyons added their second goal with 3:31 left in the third on a bid from Smith that found the top shelf.
Sheehan scored his hat trick 60 seconds into the final quarter of play to make it a 10-2 contest. Smith capped off his hat trick with two goals in the final 5:22 of the contest.
Springfield – which closed the contest with a 48-19 edge in shots – extended its winning streak to 10. The Pride have won 41 consecutive Pilgrim League contests, dating back to 2008.
