Balanced scoring leads Lyons past Southern Maine, 5-1 in Adidas Classic
NORTON, MA- Nine different Wheaton College men's soccer players chalked up at least one point in leading the Lyons past the University of Southern Maine, 5-1 on Saturday to open the two-day, four-team Adidas Kick-Off Classic at Keefe Field. A second contest between Brandeis University and Rutgers University at Newark rounds out the day's action.
Wheaton, which was facing the Huskies for the first time in program history, improved to 2-0, while the visitors fell to 0-2.
The Lyons posted the game's first three goals and held a 2-0 advantage at the half. Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) finished classmate Kyle Sye's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) cross-field pass with 19:47 to play in the opening stanza before sophomore Pablo Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) tallied an unassisted goal a little over six minutes later.
Sophomore Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) made it a 3-0 game after outrunning the Husky defense and placing his shot into the lower right corner of the net in the 52nd minute. Junior Nick Johnson's (South Portland, ME/South Portland) header off a corner kick sliced Southern Maine's deficit to two with 22:38 to go, but senior Tyler Ostholthoff (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) quickly made it a three-goal margin with a tally just 2:13 later.
Sophomore Matt Solomon (Avon, CT/Avon Old Farms) completed the scoring with 10.5 ticks on the clock, knocking home his first collegiate goal, as the hosts held a 16-4 shot advantage. Lyon junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) had one save in the win, while Husky junior David Kreps (Agawam, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) turned aside three shots in 77:19.
The Lyons will play another team for the first time tomorrow when they meet Rutgers-Newark at 12:00 p.m.
