SPRINGFIELD, MA- Junior forward Yuri Moreira's (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) pair of goals sparked the regionally-ranked Wheaton College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked Western New England College, which saw its 24-game unbeaten streak come to an end, on Wednesday at Suprenant Field.
The Lyons, who entered the game ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), handed the region's third-ranked team just their second loss in 26 games. Improving to 3-0-1, Wheaton also became the first team to score on the Golden Bears this season. Ranked 22nd nationally, Western New England slipped to 2-1.
Wheaton scored both of its goals in the opening 37 minutes before having its shutout erased with just 35 ticks on the clock. Moreira's third tally of the fall came at 19:57, while his 37th-minute game-winner proved to be the difference in a half that saw the visitors hold a 6-3 shot advantage. Moreira chipped the ball over the Golden Bear goalie before catching up with the ball and finishing the outstanding play with a header into the back of the net.
The Lyons finished with an 11-9 shot edge for the contest, while Western New England took seven of the game's eight corner kicks. Junior goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) notched five saves in picking up his second win.
Golden Bear sophomore Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) cut Wheaton's lead in half at 89:25, while senior keeper Kyle Bak (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) was credited with five stops.
The Lyons return home for the fourth time in five games on Saturday, playing Keene State College in a non-conference clash at 1:00 p.m.
