NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 13. The honor was the forward's first of his career.
Moreira turned in a pair of two-goal performances last week, helping Wheaton go 3-0, including knocking off a nationally-ranked team. At Western New England College, which is ranked 22nd in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), on Wednesday, Moreira scored in the 20th and 37th minutes during a 2-1 win to help snap the Golden Bears' 24-game unbeaten streak.
He added markers in the 31st and 81st minutes during a 2-0 win over Keene State College on Saturday before the Lyons completed the week with a 1-0 victory against Roger Williams University on Sunday, as Moreira played less than half of the match.
Moreira is off to a fast start on the young season, tallying six goals and two game-winners while recording at least two points in four of Wheaton's six contests. He now has 25 career goals, good for ninth in program history.
Wheaton, which entered the week ranked sixth in the NSCAA's regional poll, is 5-0-1 and off to its best start since 2001. The Lyons travel to Rhode Island on Wednesday to take on Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 p.m.
