SPRINGFIELD, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer junior forward Yuri Moreira's (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) 77th-minute goal stood up as the game-winner during the Lyons' 1-0 win in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday at Springfield College's Brock-Affleck Field.
Running their unbeaten streak to eight games to stand at 7-0-1 on the season, the Lyons came into today's action ranked 19th in the country and third regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Springfield fell to 2-4 during its league opener.
Moreira's free-kick strike at 76:21 pushed his team-leading goal total to seven, including three game-winners, as Wheaton controlled play for much of the game with advantages of 20-7 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks. Junior goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) turned in his third shutout of the season with four saves.
Moreira, who moved into a tie for eighth on the program's all-time goals list with 26, took advantage of a Springfield foul from just outside the box. As the Pride was setting up its wall, Moreira sent a well-placed, bending ball just inside the far right post.
Springfield freshman goalkeeper Chris Walton (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) saw steady activity throughout, finishing with nine saves, as the Lyons notched 10 shots in each half. The visitors also took six corners in the second half alone.
Wheaton plays back-to-back for the third consecutive weekend with tomorrow's home contest against Williams College at 2:00 p.m. The Ephs are ranked eighth in the regional poll.
