NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) was selected New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, October 4.
Earning the second such honor of the season, Moreira tallied a pair of game-winning goals during a 2-1 week, including in overtime during the Lyons' lone NEWMAC contest. Moreira's 102nd-minute strike gave Wheaton a 2-1 win in double overtime over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday before the forward scored during the 64th minute of a 3-0 victory against Husson University on Sunday. The Blue and White's loss came by a 1-0 count to regionally-ranked Wesleyan University on Tuesday.
Moreira has already set a career high for goals in a season with a team-best 13, which is tied for fifth most in program history. Among those 13, six are game-winners. Moving up Wheaton's all-time charts, Moreira stands fourth in program annals with 32 career goals and ninth with 70 points. Entering last week, he was leading the NEWMAC in goals and tied for first in points.
The Lyons, who are ranked 13th in the country and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), return to action on Saturday when they travel to defending league tournament champion Babson College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
