NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) was tabbed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, November 1, as the forward garnered his third such honor of the fall.
Moreira scored a pair of second-half goals over a 7:48 span to lift the Lyons to a 2-0 shutout of visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday during Wheaton's only action. Recording his league-high seventh game-winner of the fall, Moreira upped his season goal total to a conference-best 15 tallies, which is tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.
Moreira's season goal and game-winner totals are both career highs. With 34 career goals and 74 career points, he ranks fourth in school annals for tallies and is tied for seventh in points.
At 16-3-1 and 5-1 in league action, the Blue and White is ranked fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Wheaton hosts Springfield College on Wednesday in a NEWMAC Tournament first-round game at 1:30 p.m. The Lyons enter the seven-team tourney as the second seed, while Springfield is seventh.
