BENNINGTON, Vt. – Junior Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) scored a pair of goals and freshman Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) dished out two assists in Wheaton College's 7-0 win over Southern Vermont in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The win lifts the Lyons record to 2-3-2 on the season and marks their highest scoring output since potting eight goals in last year's season-opening 8-0 win against Curry on September 4. The loss evens Southern Vermont's record at 4-4-0.
Junior Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) scored what proved to be the only goal Wheaton would need 2:58 into the match off a corner kick. Freshman Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) scored his first-collegiate goal 15 minutes later to stake the Lyons to a 2-0 lead at 17:25. The half closed with Wheaton holding a 14-1 edge in shots.
Swanson tallied at 49:01 and 64:05 to push the lead to 4-0, and goals by senior Pablo Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) at 66:14, freshman Shaun Guenette (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) at 87:12, and senior Conor Finn (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) at 89:03 capped the scoring. The Lyons finished with a 32-6 advantage in shots.
Freshman Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) recorded one save to earn both his first-career win and shutout. Freshmen Brenden Shean (North Providence, R.I./North Providence) and Connor Anniello (Scotland, Conn./Windham Tech) combined to stop five Wheaton shots for Southern Vermont.
The Lyons are back in action Wednesday when they host Husson at 4 p.m. Southern Vermont plays next Sunday at Mitchell at 4 p.m.
