Judges defeat Lyons in non-conference men's soccer match, 2-0
NORTON, Mass. – Junior Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and freshman Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) each scored goals to lead the Brandeis University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Wheaton College in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Keefe Field.
Junior Blake Minchoff (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) recorded three saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season and give the Judges (7-2-1) their first win over the Lyons (4-6-2) since a win in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament in 1996. Since that loss, Wheaton owned a 13-0-1 record against Brandeis.
Brandeis outshot the Lyons 11-5 in the opening half and took a 1-0 lead at 29:06 on Savonen's fourth goal of the season. Junior Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) started the play with a corner kick and sent a low, line drive into the box that Savonen's jumped and headed into the back of the net.
Ocel's third marker of the year just over eight minutes into the second half doubled the Judges lead. Senior Steve Keuchkarian (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) sent a pass through the defense and Ocel broke in alone on freshman keeper Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne). The forward deked around Delfino to the right, then sent a low shot just past the outstretched leg of a Wheaton back and over the goal line at 53:08.
The Judges finished the afternoon with a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corners. Minchoff pushed his record to 7-2-1 with the win while Delfino stopped eight shots to fall to 3-4-2.
Freshman Luke Finklestein (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) led the Lyons with two shots on goal.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Coast Guard for a 1 p.m. match. The Judges play at Case Western Reserve at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
