NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Travis Blair (Hastinsg, N.Y./Hastings) scored a pair of goals and senior Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) tallied a goal and an assist as the Wheaton College men's soccer team scored a 3-2 win at Coast Guard Academy Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Freshman Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) made five saves in net for the Lyons, who improved to 5-6-2 (2-1-0 NEWMAC) with the win. The loss drops the Bears to 4-5-1 (1-3-0 NEWMAC) and 4-11-3 all-time against Wheaton.
Trailing 2-1 early in the second half following a penalty kick goal by Coast Guard junior Greg Kennerley (Weymouth, Mass.), Swanson was awarded a penalty kick when Kennerley was called for an intentional hand ball in the box.
After Kennerley was issued a red card and left the field – leaving the Bears one man down for the remainder of the match – Swanson converted his second penalty kick of the season to tie the match at two. Twenty minutes later, Blair blasted a shot from 25 yards out that beat freshman goalkeeper Richie Burns (Long Beach, Calif.) at 76:57. The goal was his sixth of the season and second game-winner.
Blair opened the scoring just 4:11 into the match when he took a pass from Swanson and beat Burns for his fifth goal of the season. Senior Brett Godiksen (Westbrook, Conn.) answered with a goal at 15:54 to even the score at one.
Wheaton held an 18-15 edge in shots and a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Burns finished with eight saves.
The Lyons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Henniker, N.H. for a 4 p.m. match with New England College. Coast Guard travels to Albertus Magnus for a 3:30 p.m. match on Wednesday.
