Lyons extend win streak to three with 2-1 win at WPI
WORCESTER, Mass. – Juniors Howard Manly (Aver, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) each scored first-half goals to send the Wheaton College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Freshman Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) dished out a pair of assists and freshman Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) recorded a pair of saves for the Lyons (7-6-2, 3-1-0 NEWMAC), who have won three-straight and four of their last five matches. Freshman Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) netted his sixth goal of the season for the Engineers (8-4-0, 2-2-0 NEWMAC).
The Lyons jumped out to a 1-0 led at 10:35 when Finkelstein sent a corner kick into the box that Manly knocked in for his first goal of the season. The frame closed with WPI holding a 7-4 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corners.
Wheaton doubled its lead 4:15 into the second half on Nesbitt's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Finkelstein carried the ball down the field and sent a pass to Nesbitt, who let a shot go from the left side of the field that beat sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills).
The Engineers cut the deficit to one late in the second half on Ciampa's unassisted marker at 83:26. The Wheaton defense held WPI without a shot over the final six-and-a-half minutes of action to notch its 19th win in 22 all-time meetings with the Engineers.
Wheaton doubled-up the Engineers in shots in the second half (8-4) and finished with a 12-11 advantage for the match. The Lyons also received a pair of second-half corners to bring the final count to three apiece.
The Lyons host Bridgewater State Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Engineers host Mass. Maritime Wednesday at 7 p.m.
