NORTON, Mass. – Freshman Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year, headlining the list of four Wheaton College student-athletes named to the all-conference team.
Juniors Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) and David Turina (North Yarmouth, Maine/Northfield Mount Hermon School) were named to the first team while Finkelstein and classmate Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) received second team accolades.
Nesbitt tied for second in goals (three) and third in points (seven) in six NEWMAC matches. He scored a pair of goals against Springfield as well as the game-winner at WPI. He was named NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 17 and finished with 24 points (10-4-24) in 19 matches.
Turina anchored a defense which elevated its game in 2011 playing in front of a pair of young netminders. He picked up a pair of assists from the backline in the team's 5-0 win over MIT to close the regular season and recorded eight points (1-6-8) overall.
Finkelstein led the NEWMAC with five assists and finished third in points (seven). He took the majority of corner kicks for head coach Matt Cushing down the stretch. Finkelstein tallied 19 points (1-7-9) overall while starting all 19 matches.
Blair tied for the top spot in both goals (four) and points (nine). He scored a pair of goals at Coast Guard and against MIT – including the game-winner in both matches - and completed his freshman campaign with 22 points (9-4-22) in 18 matches.
The Lyons completed the 2011 season 9-8-2 (4-2-0 NEWMAC) and suffered a 2-1 loss to eventual NEWMAC Champion Springfield in the semifinals.
