Lyons close out regular season swimming & diving slates at MIT invite
CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams saw their regular season come to a close on Saturday at the non-scoring Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Winter Invitational in Zesiger Pool.
Sophomores Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) each bested the school standard in the 100-yard individual medley. Held by Piscetta from last year, Zais posted a time of 1:02.68, which was 2.09 seconds faster than the mark set last February. Piscetta also beat her freshman time in 1:03.28.
Zais turned in an all-around solid meet, taking third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.38 before playing a part on two fourth-place relay teams. Zais swam the second leg for a 200 medley quartet that finished in 1:54.60, as the second through fifth squads were a mere 0.34 seconds apart, while anchoring a 200 free relay that was 0.42 ticks shy of second with a time of 1:41.17.
Piscetta, who captured fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley, and sophomore Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) joined Zais during both relay races, while junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) competed on the 200 medley and sophomore Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) on the 200 free.
The Lyons had three of the top-six finishers in the 200 breast, as Perkins and freshman Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison) followed Zais with fifth- and sixth-place marks, respectively. Miller and Perkins also formed half of the seventh-place 200 medley relay foursome, siding with senior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and sophomore Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep).
The men's top swimming finish came during the 200 free relay, when sophomores Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) teamed up with freshmen Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) for an eighth-place standing.
Individually, sophomore Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) turned in a pair of fifth-places finishes in the one- and three-meter dive events, Best captured ninth place in the 200 backstroke, first-year Charles Western (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) was 11th in the 200 butterfly, Sabol placed 13th in the 100 back, while Larson-Whittaker was 15th in the 100 free.
The Lyons now turn their attention to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, with the women returning to MIT for the third time this season to compete in the three-day conference meet beginning on Friday, February 20. The men's league championship is the following weekend, with Wheaton serving as the host.
