Wheaton men and women sweep dual meet from NEWMAC foe Babson
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving squads both knocked off New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College on Saturday during a dual meet in Balfour Natatorium, returning home for the first time since November 19. The Lyon women won their ninth consecutive decision against the Beavers, improving to 7-4 this season after a 180-102 victory. Wheaton's men broke into the win column for the first time this year, capturing a 154-137 decision in moving to 1-11. The Lyons recorded their fifth straight triumph over the Beavers.
The women captured 15 of the 16 events against Babson, with junior Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) playing a hand in three of the triumphs. Zais won the 50- and 200-yard freestyle races, finishing the 200 in 2:05.19, just 0.04 seconds ahead of freshman Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty). During the 200 free relay, Zais combined with classmates Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) for the victory.
Farrell and Piscetta also swam for the winning 400 medley relay foursome, being joined by juniors Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) and Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, ME/Greely). Hollar nabbed a second victory in the 200 butterfly, Perkins topped the 200 breaststroke field, and sophomore Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) swept the one- and three-meter diving events for the third straight meet.
Seniors Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Chelsea Stephenson (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) won the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle, respectively, while sophomore Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame) captured the 100 butterfly and classmate Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison) bested the 100 breaststroke field. A trio of freshmen rounded out Wheaton's winners, as Katie Bordeau (Sanford, ME/Sanford), Julia Kusiak Carey (Shawmut, ME/Lawrence) and Kirstie Parkinson (Singapore, Singapore/Singapore American School) won the 200 back, 1,000 free and 200 individual medley, respectively. Parkinson won in 2:26.16, which was 0.19 seconds over the runner up.
Junior Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) won twice on the men's side to pace Wheaton, capturing the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Classmate Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) took the 500 free race over second-place sophomore Christian Woods (Claremont, CA/Webb School of California) after Woods won the 1,000 free in 10:33.42, just 0.30 seconds ahead of the second-place Gillie. During the 200 butterfly, Gillie placed 0.04 ticks short of sophomore Charles Western (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), who won with a time of 2:08.63.
Junior Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) won the 100 breaststroke while coming up 0.33 seconds short of first during a second-place showing in the 200 individual medley. Classmate Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) won the 200 breast, while his brother, sophomore Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood), matched Gillie with a team-high four top-two placements.
Wheaton's squads head up to Medford for a double-dual meet next Saturday at Tufts University, where they will also take on Bates College. The women start competing at 12:00 p.m. before the men's portion of the meet kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
