NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's swimming & diving team's top 400-yard medley relay quartet took fourth to highlight the Lyons' showing on the opening day of the three-day New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Friday in Balfour Natatorium. Wheaton is hosting the event for the fourth time in five years and sixth time since 2000.
Wheaton heads into Saturday with 72 points, sitting seventh while trailing Babson College by only two points. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whose athletes won all five events on the opening day, sits in first with 303 points.
The Lyons' A 400 medley relay foursome came within 0.68 seconds of third place, turning in a time of 3:35.76. Juniors Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) raced with sophomore Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and freshman Sam Neill (Ludlow, MA/Belchertown).
Fichman-Klein and Neill combined with junior Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) and sophomore Andrew Oliveri (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) for a seventh-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Dean-Lee was the lone Lyon to qualify for an individual finals race, taking 15th during the 500 free consolation. Junior Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) came within 0.65 seconds of making the 200-yard individual medley consolation finals race.
Saturday's schedule begins with the trials at 11:00 a.m. before the finals competitions kick off at 6:30 p.m. with the 200-yard medley relay serving as the first event.
