Wheaton finishes two-day competition at seven-school MIT Invitational
CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams completed the second and final day of competition on Saturday at the seven-school Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational at Zesiger Pool.
The women took fourth place with 403 points, while the men came in seventh with 187. New York University claimed top honors for the women, and the hosts won the men's meet.
Junior Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) turned in a top time in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.85, coming within 0.60 seconds of an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard, and added a runner-up mark in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA provisional time of 58.39. Additionally, Piscetta's 50-yard free time of 24.38 while leading off the 200-yard free relay was a provisional mark. Classmate Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) was second in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, and sophomore Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) came in third during the one-meter dive.
Third-place marks also came from Wheaton's 200-yard free and medley relays, with Piscetta, Zais and junior Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) swimming a leg on each. Senior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) joined the trio during the 200-yard medley relay, while freshman Elle Van Cott (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) anchored the 200-yard free quartet.
Farrell, Meehan, Piscetta and Zais combined for a fourth-place result in the 400-yard medley relay, sophomore Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison) took fourth in the 200-yard breast, and Piscetta and Wright were fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and three-meter dive, respectively.
For the men, junior diver Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) was fifth and sixth in the one- and three-meter competitions, respectively, while classmate Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep), sophomores Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Spencer Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), and freshman Sam Neill (Ludlow, MA/Belchertown) sided for a ninth-place finish in the 800-yard free relay.
Best and Neill joined juniors Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) in placing ninth in the 400-yard medley relay, while Dean-Lee, Fichman-Klein, Neill and junior Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) also took ninth in the 400-yard free relay. Rounding out the top-10 marks were the 10th-place 200-yard free relay, comprised of Dean-Lee, Fichman-Klein, Neill and Sabol.
The Wheaton teams conclude their first semester of action next Saturday at home when they host the Lyons Invitational at 12:00 p.m.
