NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams welcomed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Roger Williams University and Tufts University for the non-scoring Charlie Batterman Relays on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium.
Highlighting the meet for the Lyons came on the day's final event, as seniors Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy), Dania Piscetta (Belmont, N.H./Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) along with freshman Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) topped the 200-yard freestyle relay field with a time of 1:38.49, which fell 1.55 seconds shy of an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard.
Madden, who was 0.26 ticks short of a provisional qualifying time in the 50-yard free during her collegiate debut last weekend, went 24.62 this afternoon, which was 0.52 seconds shy of a provisional mark. Madden, Piscetta, Zais and sophomore Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) posted a runner-up finish during the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.45, which was 1.46 seconds off MIT's winning time.
Other second-place finishes were the 200-yard backstroke relay, consisting of Auger, Madden, Piscetta and sophomore Elle Van Cott (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), the 400-yard free relay, comprised of the same four who raced the 200-yard free relay, and the 400-yard individual medley relay. Perkins, Zais, senior Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and sophomore Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) competed in that event, with Zais breaking her own school record in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:02.05.
Taking third during the 500-yard free crescendo relay were Isaacs, Perkins, Van Cott and freshman Rachel Brown (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang).
Similar to the women, the men's 200-yard freestyle relay marked the meet's high point, as seniors Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep), sophomore Sam Neill (Ludlow, Mass./Belchertown) and freshman Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) combined to take third.
Fichman-Klein, Jenkins, Sabol and freshman Chris Woods (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) came in third during the 200-yard backstroke relay, as did Fichman-Klein, senior Corey Best (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) and freshmen Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Nick Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) in the 200-yard butterfly relay. During the 400-yard free relay, Jenkins, Neill, Sabol and senior Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn./Xavier) also placed third.
Wheaton returns to action one week from today in New York City, where the Lyons will compete against host NYU and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe United States Coast Guard Academy in a double-dual meet at 1:00 p.m.
