Wheaton drops pair of decisions to NESCAC foe Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams had their respective winning streaks come to an end at New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Tufts University on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton Pool.

Falling to 3-9 following their 188-105 loss, the men went up against the 16th-ranked team in the country according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), while the women, who entered today ranked 22nd nationally, were handed a 175-109 setback.

Senior Dania Piscetta (Belmont, N.H./Belmont) secured the top time in the 50-yard freestyle event in 24.40 while taking second in the 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard individual medley.  Classmate Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) won the 100-yard IM in a school-record time of 1:01.49, which broke a 30-year-old pool mark.  She also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed third in the 50-yard breast.

In the 400-yard medley relay, the pair sided with senior Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and sophomore Elle Van Cott (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) to hold down the runner-up spot.  Van Cott was also a part of the second-place 200-yard free relay team, which comprised of junior Sarah Miller (Madison, N.J./Madison), sophomore Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) and freshman Rachel Brown (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang).  Van Cott finished third during the 100-yard backstroke competition.

In diving, senior Emma Chaiken (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) recorded a pair of third-place marks off the one- and three-meter platforms.

Continuing with the diving theme, freshman Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) broke his own school record in the one-meter event with 262.73 points, good for second, while taking third off the three-meter springboard.

In the swimming events, freshman Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) touched the wall first during the 100-yard freestyle while placing third in the 50-yard free and joining sophomores Sam Neill (Ludlow, Mass./Belchertown) and Griffin Hanley (Andover, Mass./North Andover) and freshman Nick Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) for the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay finish.

Senior Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) was the runner up in the 50-yard backstroke, while classmates Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn./Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) came in third in the 50-yard breaststroke and butterfly events, respectively.

The Lyons take part in their final home meet of the regular season next weekend, hosting the two-day Wheaton Invitational beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
