WORCESTER, Mass. - Sparked by seven first-place finishes, the Wheaton College men's swimming & diving team defeated Clark University 138-99 Friday afternoon at Kneller Athletic Center. The women's team split their tri-meet, defeating Clark 135-116 while falling to Mount Holyoke 126-110.
Senior Christian Woods (Claremont, Calif./Webb School of California) and sophomore Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury School) each posted a pair of first-place finishes for the Lyons. Maier took first in the 1 mtr (229.80) and 3 mtr (203.40) diving events while Woods placed first in the 500-yard (5:15.77) and 1,000-yard (11:03.77) free.
A pair of freshman - Nick Fredette (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) and Dominic Ziolek (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) - also placed first in their events. Fredette won the 200-yard free (1:52.96) while Ziolek captured first in the 200-yard breast (2:29.85). Wheaton's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Fredette, junior Sam Neill (Ludlow, Mass./Belchertown), and sophomores Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) and Nick Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) took first with a time of 1:31.00.
On the women's side, sophomore Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) won the 50-yard free (24.69) and teamed up with senior Taryn Brosnan (Westford, Mass./Academy of Notre Dame), junior Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford), and sophomore Nina Lanctot (Chatham, Mass.) to win the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:14.63. Madden also took second in the 100-yard free, Brosnan placed second in the 200-yard butterfly, and Lanctot was second in the 200-yard breast.
Also recording second-place finishes for the women include: senior Alexandra Wilson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) in the 1 mtr dive; senior Sarah Miller (Madison, N.J./Madison) in the 500-yard free; junior Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) in the 1,000-yard free; freshman Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) in the 200-yard IM; and the 200-yard free relay team of Auger, Morris, junior Elle Van Cott (Back Delmar, N.Y./Bethelhem Central) and freshman Callie Renfrew (Vacaville, Calif./Webb School of California).
The Lyons return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Trinity (Conn.) at 1 p.m. Clark competes at the Worcester City Championships on Jan. 20. Mount Holyoke competes at Simmons College tomorrow at noon.
