Wheaton swimming & diving teams defeat WPI, fall to Tufts

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams each defeated WPI and lost to Tufts University Saturday afternoon at Balfour Natatorium. The Lyons men's team defeated WPI 187.5-179.5 and lost to Tufts 210.5-149.5 while the women knocked off the Engineers 190-179 and fell to the Jumbos 191-158.

Freshman Richard Jenkins (Bow, N.H./Bow) recorded a pair of first-place finishes in the 50-yard (26.69) and 100-yard back (58.35). Classmate Ben Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) placed second in the 3 mtr and third in the 1 mtr dive events while sophomore Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) placed second in the 1 mtr and third in the 3 mtr.

Third-place finishers for the men included senior Christian Woods (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) in the 1,000-yard free, senior Devon Best (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) in the 100-yard back, junior Sam Neill (Ludlow, Mass./Belchertown) in the 50-yard and 100-yard free, sophomore Nick Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) in the 50-yard butterfly, and freshman Nick Fredette (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Nina Lanctot (Chatham, Mass.) earned a pair of first-place finishes in the 50-yard (32.65) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.03) for the women's team. Freshman Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) picked up the Lyons other first-place finish in the 50-yard back. She also took second in the 100-yard free and teamed with Lanctot and seniors Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) and Taryn Brosnan (Westford, Mass./Academy of Notre Dame) to place second in the 200-yard medley.

Brosnan later placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke while junior Elle Van Cott (Back Delmar, N.Y./Bethelhem Central) was runner-up in the 50-yard free. Third-place finishers for Wheaton included Van Cott in the 100-yard back, senior Sarah Miller (Madison, N.J./Madison) in the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) in the 1,000-yard free, and freshman Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) in the 50-yard butterfly.

Both squads return to action on Friday when they host the two-day Wheaton Invitational. Friday's events begin at 6 p.m.
