Women finish fifth, men seventh at NEWMAC Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Christian Woods (Claremont, Calif./Webb School of California) and junior Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) each broke Wheaton College program records on the final day of competition at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championship Sunday afternoon at MIT. The women finished fifth (335.5 points) while the men placed seventh (216 points).

Woods set a school-record in the 1,650-yard free when he completed the event with a mark of 16:53.88 - breaking the old mark by .21 seconds. He also broke the program record for the 1,000-yard free (10:12.86) and went on to finish 13th.

Isaacs, meanwhile, broke her third and fourth school-records in three days when she posted a time of 18:01.37 in the 1,650-yard free, breaking the old program record (18:06.18) by nearly five seconds. In the process, she also broke her own school record in the 1,000-yard free (10:51.00).

Sophomore Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) finished second in the 100-yard free (52.46). Senior Taryn Brosnan (Westford, Mass./Academy of Notre Dame) placed third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.67). Freshman Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) notched a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard free (54.27).

The women's 400-yard relay team of Isaacs, Madden, and juniors Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) and Elle Van Cott (Back Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) placed fourth with a time of 3:42.02.

For the men, freshman Nick Fredette (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) placed fifth-place in the 200-yard breast (2:12.57) while classmate Dominic Ziolek (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) snatched ninth in the 200-yard breast (2:14.76). Senior Devon Best (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) finished 10th in the 200-yard back (1:59.40).

Wheaton student-athletes with national qualifying times will compete at the NCAA Championship on March 21-24 in Knoxville, Tenn.
