SALEM, MA- A trio of Wheaton College men's tennis doubles tandems notched wins before the Lyons split their six singles matches in a 6-3 triumph over Salem State College on Thursday at the Central Campus Tennis Courts. At 10-5, Wheaton has recorded double digits in wins for the ninth time in 11 years despite beginning the 2008-09 school year at 0-3. The Vikings slipped to 4-4 on the season.
Two of the Lyons' doubles teams produced 8-2 wins, with senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) turning the feat in the second position, while sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) following suit at three.
Junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) notched an 8-5 triumph in the top slot.
During singles action, Altman, Krantz and Little all earned victories in straight sets, while two teammates fell in three sets. Little notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at two, Altman corralled a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in the fourth spot, and Krantz nearly blanked his foe, 6-0, 6-1 at five.
Sophomore Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) rallied to force a third set during a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 loss in the sixth spot, while Hudgins saw a lead slip away in a 3-6, 7-6, 12-10 setback at three.
Wheaton returns to the court for its regular season finale on Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match at Babson College at 1:00 p.m.
