NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis players Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) and Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 academic year.
Entering their senior seasons, the two earned their second straight ITA accolades. Each also picked up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference awards, while Hudgins was named to a NEWMAC All-Conference team for the third straight year.
Beekman, who is a psychobiology major, compiled a 3.83 grade-point average last year, while Hudgins carried a 3.79 GPA as a history major. The tandem was two of 12 NEWMAC representatives among the 268 male Division III ITA Scholar-Athletes.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at his or her present school for at least two semesters.
Wheaton posted an 11-7 record under 20th-year head coach Lynn Miller, who guided her team to the conference tournament semifinals for the seventh consecutive season. Winners in 11 of their final 15 matches, the Lyons placed third in the league standings with a 3-2 mark.
