HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College men's tennis team began its southern trip on a strong note thanks to an 8-1 victory over non-conference foe Saint Norbert College of Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.
The Lyons move to 2-0 on the young season, while the Green Knights were playing in their 14th match, falling to 4-10.
Wheaton secured wins in two of three doubles matches to take an early lead, as juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) led the way with an 8-2 triumph at number three.
The Blue and White swept singles action, as Altman, Hudgins, Oliver and senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) each won in straight sets. Hudgins yielded just four games at number three, while Oliver and Little allowed five each in the first and second positions, respectively. Altman won 7-5, 6-2 in the sixth spot.
Krantz and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) downed their opponents in three sets. At number five, Krantz fell 7-6 in the opening set before responding with 6-1 and 10-8 scores to capture the win. Poulin notched a 6-2 first-set victory in the fourth position, lost the middle set in a tiebreaker, and squeezed out a 12-10 win in the last set.
Wheaton returns to the courts tomorrow morning against 2009 NCAA Tournament qualifier Ithaca College at 11:30 a.m.
