Lyons keep close with regionally-ranked Ithaca during 7-2 setback

HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College men's tennis team picked up its first loss of the season, dropping a tightly-contested 7-2 decision on Monday to Ithaca College, which is ranked 15th in the Northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Lyons are now 2-1, while the Bombers improved to 4-2.

In doubles play, juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) notched a 9-7 victory in the third position, but a pair of Lyon duos dropped narrow decisions. Senior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and sophomore Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) dropped a 9-7 decision at one to the region's third-ranked tandem, while senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) suffered a 9-8 loss in the second slot.

Altman picked up Wheaton's lone singles point, winning 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in the fifth position, and Oliver won his second set in the first spot before falling by a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 count. Little suffered a two-set loss at two but dropped the second set just 7-5, and Krantz lost by a 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 count in the sixth position.

The Lyons play their third match in as many days tomorrow against Denison University at 11:30 a.m. Denison is ranked ninth in the ITA's Central region poll.
