HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College men's tennis team finished up its four-match spring break trip with an abbreviated 5-1 victory over the University of Scranton on Wednesday. The Lyons improved to 3-2 while dropping the Royals to 5-2.
Wheaton and Scranton played singles first, where the Lyons took five matches. Seniors James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) won in straight sets in the second and third positions, respectively, while junior Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) captured a 6-0, 6-3 win at five. Classmate Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) nabbed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at six.
Junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) won in three sets at the fourth slot, while sophomore Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) rallied for a 6-0 victory in the second set in the top position before falling in three sets.
All three of Wheaton's doubles teams led before inclement weather led to the early completion of the match. Little and Poulin were the closest to victory, leading 5-3 at two.
Wheaton returns north to face the visiting University of Massachusetts at Boston next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
